My Thoughts On American Idol "Top 6 Perform"
Welcome back everybody to your favorite American Idol recap. Earlier today, I wrote a review on last nights 90 minute episode of Glee, check out the website for that. Last week saw Stefano rightfully go home. What we have now is a top 6 where I don’t like anybody except for Casey and sometimes Haley.
Ryan introduces us to the top 6 before we even get our customary “This Is American Idol”. That’s how you know its important kids! Voiceover guy introduces us to the judges. If I honestly had to pick and MVP of the season it would be voice over guy. He just never misses a beat. The theme of the week is music by Carole King. I am asleep already. The performances had better be great because this truly might be the most boring theme American Idol has ever picked. Brief tangent here: a rival network debuts a show that is going to compete with American Idol, on that show they throw 4 of the most popular musicians at this moment at the audience, so how does Idol respond? With Carole freaking King? Someone has lost touch with their audience. Ok my tangent is over. Jimmy Iovine has brought Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds to help mentor. Oh Joy!
Jacob Lusk is up first. He is doing “Oh No, Not My Baby” What follows is a hilarious montage of Jacob butchering the song in every possible way. I am usually not one to comment on someone’s style, but what the hell is Jacob wearing? it’s a strange combo of yellow shirt, teal vest, purple bow tie, and a checkered jacket. The song is a little more upbeat then Jacob has done throughout the competition so that’s a positive. Parts of the song he sings decently but there are a lot of parts that are just screechy and screamy. I bet the judges love it though! I am so over Jacob’s whole act. Steven likes that Jacob shook his tail feathers. Jennifer likes that he stuck with the song and even thought there were spaces where it wasn’t perfect, he killed it in the end. Randy agrees it was sharp in a few spots but he likes that he brought the energy and that he went back to just singing.
Lauren Alana is up next. I think she is really hamming up her southern accent because for the life of me I understand the name of the song she says she is singing. Its never been an issue before. Jimmy surprises Lauren by bringing out Miley Cyrus. How come nobody ever surprises me with a Miley Cyrus? After further research the song she is singing is called “Where You Lead” Its not as boring as she has been the last couple weeks but it is still not that memorable. Lauren has this issue in when she lacks energy, she gets drowned out by her background singers. The definitely happens once or twice during this performance. Overall, on a scale of 1 to 10, id give it a Meh. Jennifer says she felt her pushing and she is proud that she was pushing. She never says whether it was a good or bad performance though. Randy starts with his usual over generalities and basically says he liked Laurens attitude. He wants he to continue to go hard for it. Steven thinks the breaks in her voice show character. Ryan calls a young guy on stage who was ogling Lauren. The kid is 19 so Ryan tells him they have rules. Ok, that was pretty funny.
We are also doing duets tonight. The duets are usually terrible. First up is Haley and Casey. They are singing “I Feel The Earth Move” Casey says he likes growling with her. Its funny because they are dating. Ill keep my reviews of these duets brief. I feel like Casey should have done this song as his solo. Its an entertaining duet. There voices really do mesh well together. Wow. Stevens first words after the song: “Hey weird beard, how much in love with Haley are you?” This is awkward. He thought the performance was great.
Scotty McCreery is up next. He is doing “You’ve Got a Friend” Jimmy says this is the most romantic song that Scotty has done and that he really needs to bring the subtlety, This is definitely not a country song. Granted it still sounds like country because anything he sings is going to sound country, but this is so much better then last week its not even funny. It really is a beautiful performance of a beautiful song. It pains me to say it because I don’t like Scotty, but I think he absolutely crushed it. In the words of Billy Bob from Varsity Blues “It was a fucking 10!” Randy says it was excellent but he needs to not fall off on the high notes. Steven doesn’t think he has ever sang better. Jennifer says when they hear him sing a song like this, that’s why they need to get on him when he sings a song like last week. She also says h e is a great storyteller.
James Durbin is up next. He is doing “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” James is leaving the theatrics at home for this performances and that’s good because it’s a sweet and subtle song. Jimmy and Babyface are loving this. I have to say, this new side of James is very good. He shows he does not need to be going a mile a minute and does not need to scream every not in order to be successful. It is a very nice performance. Steven says he had him sold right from the beginning. He also says that was the first song he ever made out with a girl to. Jennifer thought it was magical. She thinks he is going to be the star of the night. Oh my god shut up Randy. “In It To Win It” is the new “pitchy” He says James finally showed he could sing with the best of them. Randy also says he thinks James is going to win.
Next is a duet from Lauren and Scotty. Ryan tries to insinuate something going on between them but they both insist they have more of a brother and sister relationship. They are doing “Up on The Roof” They both sing well but it is an extremely boring duet. Jennifer says that it was very beautiful.
Casey Abrams is up next. He is doing “Hi-De-Ho” Him and the mentors have a blast just jamming to the song. What Casey does he basically is an extended version of the blues. I happen to think the performance is excellent but it is the kind of song choice that may not resonate with everyone. Randy loves that he keeps it different every time. He feels like the song was written for Casey. Steven says it was beautiful and that it made his scalp itch. Jennifer loved it but would like to see Casey loosen up a little more.
Haley Reinhart is the last solo act. She is doing “Beautiful” Jimmy tell her she needs to hit the word “Get” harder. We come back from the video and Idol is having some technical difficulties. She does a pretty good job with it. There is a couple parts where the song really slows down where it sound a little off but she makes up for it by really hitting on the rest of the song, complete with her signature growling. Steven says she is as beautiful as that song, and It made him see god. Jennifer says she has one of the best voices in the competition and it was beautiful. Randy did not like the beginning and he is met with a chorus of boo’s from everyone including Jennifer. He says he really got into it at the end though.
The last duet is with Jacob and James. They are singing “I’m into something good” The song starts off sounding really cheesy and does not really get any better. James does a decent enough job but Jacob is definitely the weak link of the two. Steven did not really like it but said at least they had fun.
If you didn’t watch and are just reading the recap, the second half of the show was EXTREMELY rushed. First time this year they have had an issue with time. I actually think American and I will agree this week. The Bottom 3 will be Jacob, Lauren and Haley, with Jacob Lusk going home.
